How to choose the right Gas Boiler?
All our listed Gas Boilers are credible and well known brands, tested to the highest standards within the industry.
There are a couple of factors to consider when making a decision-
- The Output size of the boiler
- The physical size of the boiler
- The Warranty/Guarantee length
- Your budget
- Controls for the boiler
Output size of the new Gas Boiler
Quite simply this is the amount of radiators the boiler needs to supply.
A good rule of thumb is simply going by your house size.
- 15kw-Small 2/3 bedroom terraced house/apt.
- 18kw-Larger detached 3 bedroom home.
- 21kw- 4 Bedroom home.
- 24kw- Large 4/5 bedroom home.
- 30+ kw- Large fully detached homes multiple bedrooms.
Please note 18kw+ boilers may require the gas supply to be upgraded, our engineers can give advice on this at a technical survey, if required.
For more info on sizing read our guide on boiler sizing https://www.generalgas.ie/what-size-gas-boiler-does-my-house-need/
Physical Size of the Gas Boiler
Most gas boilers will be incorporated in the kitchen and are usually hidden from view in a press.
This needs to be taken into account when deciding on what boiler you’re going with.
While most modern units are all pretty much the same size, some can be slightly larger than others.
We will take all necessary actions to make sure your new boiler will fit neatly in your kitchen press, and advise you if the boiler you decide on, isn’t to large for the space provided.
Warranty/Guarantee
All our listed boilers will have at least 7 years cover and a magnetic filter.
Anything less should not be entertained and We would advice against it, this will indicate that the installer isn’t accredited and can’t offer long term warranties.
For more info on gas boiler warranties take the time to read our guide on the importance of a good install warranty https://www.generalgas.ie/gas-boiler-installer-accreditation/
Budget
We’re aware that this is our customers most important concern. The boilers we install are all of the highest quality, so even our cheapest priced options are quality and reputable brands.
All our listed prices are inclusive of VAT so there are no hiding charges.
All our options have been carefully structured to ensure We get the best possible quote for our customers.
Controls for your new boiler
Controls for the boiler are rarely integrated or built into modern boilers.
Therefore the new boiler will require an external control to operate.
Basically you’ll have three options.
- New basic controls
- New modern remote access types, controlled via your smart phone
- Keep your existing controls
New basic controls
A basic control is usually a digital type that will allow you multi function control over the boiler.
They normally have 5 functions, no matter what the brand is.
- OFF – This is basically as it reads, the boiler is OFF until you change it on the controls.
- ON- Again this is basically ON until you change it on the controls.
- TIMED- This is the control you’ll use if you want the boiler to come on at pre-programmed set times. Usually the controller will have 3 time settings. MORNING, MIDDAY and AFTERNOON.
- ADVANCE-This setting allows you to fast forward to your next pre-programmed setting without interrupting the programmed times. For example if it’s 11 am and your next programme is say between 1/3, you can press this button and the setting will ADVANCE to the 1/3 schedule, when the schedule is finished the timer will revert back to normal.
- BOOST- The BOOST normally gives you an option of 1,2 or 3 hours. If you boost for 1 hour the boiler will come on and after the hour is up it will automatically turn off. The same for the 2 or 3 hour boosts.
Modern remote access controls
These controls are becoming more and more popular.
They all have the basic controls of standard ones, but with much more ease of access to use.
All will have a thermostat, this will measure the room temperature of where it’s located. The thermostat should help reduce bills because it gives you more control over the room temperature eliminating wasteful overheating.
They are normally battery operated, meaning no need for supply cables basically allowing them to go anywhere.
And remote access means you can turn the heating on via your smartphone, anywhere in the world.
All our controls are installed free of charge, we basically only look for the cost of the controls.
However, if you’re looking to keep costs down and you’re happy with your existing controls, we will be more than happy to include then on the new boiler install.
